Emotional Adaptation and Responses to Training for the Coach and Athlete

Joe Sullivan

Athletes and coaches can have the best laid plans in the world to become or make the best progress, and ensure victory for whatever goal they are headed towards. However, humans are emotional creatures that can only apply logic to themselves to a limited degree. That degree is variable for the individual, but this course will examine how, why, and when a coach or athlete must consider the emotional response to training, and how important it actually is to ensure continuous progress and furthermore enjoyment of the training process. With burnout rates being high in youth sports, and in the little world of powerlifting it is imperative we devise strategies to manage the emotional stress that comes along with performing at the high level, both for the individuals doing that competition and for the individuals handling their training.
