Course Syllabus

Many of us are well versed with "core" training. We have spent endless hours reading the research, watching videos, and practicing movements/exercises. Everyone knows the importance of "core" training for the transfer of force from the lower to the upper body and upper to lower body, developing rotational power, creating stabilization for movement efficiency, and protecting lumbo-pelvic mechanics under load. Movement requires force production and the core permits this transfer of force via kinetic coupling mechanics. By now, we are all masters of core training.

The foot can be considered the core between the musculoskeletal system and the environment we train on. Just like the "abdominal core" system importance for correct force transfer though the kinetic chain, the "foot core" system is vital for force production needed for locomotion, speeding up, slowing down, changing direction, jumping and landing. Different foot structures can impact the way forces are transmitted through the musculoskeletal system leading to biomechanical issues along the kinetic chain.

Unlike traditional "abdominal core" training, many of us neglect the foot, with little to no consideration of it, its structure, or how it impacts the way we move and produce/absorb forces. Given the inherent complexity of this structure, relative to other parts of the musculoskeletal system, this is surprising.

This introductory course will enhance your knowledge of the complexity of the foot and create a better awareness/understanding of the need to train this complex structure. Furthermore, understanding the type of foot you have will allow you to better understand training and injury risks/issues.

During this course you will explore:
1. Bones, joints, muscles and landmarks of the foot
2. Identify different foot structures with simple examination
3. Explore the foots impact on lower body mechanics
4. Explore the Windlass mechanism and its importance for locomotion
5. Practice exercises/drills to enhance foot function and lower body movement.
